Day 4: Sydney
On our fourth morning, we took a two-hour train ride back to Sydney and checked into the Russell Hotel near Circular Quay, the perfect spot to catch both trains and ferries for the rest of our stay. We set out to walk the Sydney Cove harbor from The Rocks, site of the Harbour Bridge, to the Opera House. We stopped en route to have a seafood lunch harborside. I am pleased to report that the Moreton Bay Bugs on the platter were flathead lobsters, not insects. As we ate, our view to the left was of hardy souls climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge (completed in 1932 and finally paid off in 1988) for the princely sum of $200 per person. Various public and private ferries came and went next to us. To our right was the Sydney Opera House, looking gorgeous on a brilliantly sunny, 70-degree day. This is my kind of winter!
Our live entertainment was provided by the seagulls, who moved in the very second the party next to us departed. But they were not after the variety of seafood — no, the prize they sought was French fries.
